Burns Night at Merrist Wood Golf Club

Simon Fowler -Weekly update 26.01.12

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This week Simon has jetted of to a slightly warmer  Florida, but looking at the forecast for tomorrow
just as wet. The annual PGA Merchandise show at Orange County National is one of the reasons for his visit as well as a bit of golf. The show provides an
insight into all the 2012 product ranges from all the major manufactures and holds seminars with some golfing legends inc the ‘Golden Bear’ Jack Nicklaus.

Another golfing legend ventured out for a spot of links golf this week down in Sandwich Kent, The course was in a great condition and for the front nine the golf was good and then dreaded hossle rocket (shank) appeared and ruined everything. Which makes me think about taking up Simons February lesson offer.

The January warmth and lack of rain showed that it wasn’t a thing of the past this week with a lot of rain falling over the last few days. We sent an Email yesterday informing of the Buggy and trolley ban starting on Friday the 27th. Trolleys may still be used if a medical certificate is provided or has previously been shown.

Simon Fowler Head Professional – News Letter 18.01.12

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just spent the last 2 days attending the ‘Surrey County Coaches’ Conference. This was a not to be missed experience, listeningto some well known industry professionals.

In the line up of speakers they had some well known coaches, fitness experts, elite coaches.

The presentation that was head and shoulders above the rest was Matthew Syed, an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, and author of “Bounce”, described as “among the most intelligent and thought-provoking books about sport ever written”I have to say, he could have captured the audience all day. I have purchased my copy of “Bounce” and I would would recommend you do the same.
In conclusion from two days of other peoples opinions, there are many different ways to go about your business, however it doesn’t do any harm to listen to differing opinions and think outside the box once in a while. Next week I have another big week lined up, after which I will be full of inspiration for 2012, watch this space for more information. Conditions on the course have been testing in the earlier part of the week with heavy frosts. Just as we are getting good at landing shortand waiting for the BOUNCE the temperatures rise and the game plan has to change! It has to be 12 degrees warmer today
than yesterday!

I had a successful trip to Pine Ridge last week with one of our members. We used the launch monitor and various demo clubs on offer to determine the correct specification. The happy customer concerned duly ordered his new set from me and the wonder clubs arrived two days later. Please remember this is a good facility we can use if necessary.

Pearson Trophy Merrist Wood Ladies vs Strawberry Hill

The Merrist Wood Ladies Team is currently playing in the group stages of the Pearson Trophy, a prestigious County competition where teams of 7 play individual matchplay, home and away, against three or four otherSurrey clubs.  The competition is for ladies with handicaps between 13 and 32.  We have completed five of our six matches.  Once all the clubs have played their group matches, we will know whether we have played well enough to progress to the knock-out stages.  Keep playing well, ladies!

The Ladies are also playing in the Mail on Sunday Classic, a national knock-out competition which starts with a match against another local club.  It is for ladies with a maximum handicap of 24, and is played in teams of 5.  This year we have been drawn against Worplesdon Golf Club (away) in the first round.

Weekly Update from Simon Fowler – Head Golf Professional

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Christmas festivities are a distant memory now that January is in full swing. The mild conditions remain allowing for some regular golf, which is a bonus this time of year. The course is holding up well, just a few wet areas to keep clear of.

The PGA Tour has its first champion of 2012. Steve Stricker won the season opener in Hawaii. The course there looked spectacular,
with fantastic views over the ocean. It seems the Merrist Wood wind was there for the week!!
One of SSS (Steve Stricker Stats) was that he was No1 in 2011 from within 125 yards with an average of 12′. Not bad eh?
The big question is, Will Tiger Woods win before April? or is he too busy enjoying himself away from golf?!!
My prediction is a win before The Masters.

I nipped out for a quick 9 this afternoon, Just a few clubs on board, a leisurely walk to ease back into the game. I’m sure that lake on the left of the 6th has got bigger. My beloved ball went swimming there today!

Our retail promotions are continuing through January, notable offers include;

ST GEORGES DAY CELEBRATIONS

ST GEORGES DAY CELEBRATIONS

Often in the past, there have been celebrations for St Patrick’s Day, but our Patron Saint seems to be overlooked but this year, Captain Ashley Gregory was determined that this would not be the case, as the day, not only fell on Easter Saturday, but the weather was an unseasonably warm, 27 C.

A Texas Scramble was the chosen competition, when 99 members, registered early for a shotgun start at 9 o’clock.

Coffee and a pastry greeted the players to fortify them for the “ battle” ahead, as they made their way to their nominated start places, and, then, as the clock struck nine, the cry went out “God for Harry, England and St George”. Actually, a fog horn sounded and the game commenced.

As the game finished, the players red faced and thirsty returned to the club house to eat sandwiches and chips, with a barrel of real ale on the bar to quench their thirsts.

In superb conditions, high scores were submitted and the winning team was :- Chris Jenkins, John Cox, Steve Tonks and Dave Osgood, who scored 53 points.

The celebrations continued in the evening, as members returned to dance the night away, to the music by the “Soul Proposal”, which is a young group, in which Laurence’s son, Alex, is the drummer. Their music and the singer, Jodie, were greeted with much delight, and, the band , if successful in the semi final of a band competition for aspiring and up and coming musicians, will go on to perform at the O2. We wish them well and hope that they will perform for us again in the not too distant future.

Laurence took advantage of the karaoke with a few Elvis numbers,. Some lady members sang to Dolly Parton, and our GM Martin stood up (just), supported by the mike and “ sang a tune “ – Don’t give up your day job, Martin !!! .

Our Chief Raffle Vendor, Dutch, was on hand sell tickets and raised £100 towards the Captain’s charity.

All in all, a great day.

Dear Members,

My first email to you as your new General Manager – long live the king, the king is dead!

Firstly, I would hope that I speak for all of us, I’d like to say a big thank you to Nick Hughes for all the great work he has done over the last 2 and a half years here at Merrist Wood, it goes with out saying his tweed jacket, public school accent & his buoyant demeanour approach will be surely missed, Good Luck in your new venture Nick.

This neatly links to an introduction to myself, and as most of you will have been aware I have been promoted to General Manager from the Course/Regional Manager role with the Green Keeping side.  I’d like to thank those of you who have passed on your kinds words of encouragement.

Nick and I have a full month’s handover and I intend to carry on the good work that has been put in over the last two and half years.  With the focus on communication and service, the transition period will hopefully be smooth and certainly a learning curve for me.

Friday 25th February – Funky Friday – Live Band – The Zen Relics are back – £10 per person including a light buffet – this also happens to be Nick’s Leaving Doo.  Tickets are available from the Office.

Friday 18th March – Music Quiz with a Twist! – £10 per person including a Curry and Prize Fund – Roy the Boy will be hosting this and I believe a game of ‘Play Your Cards Right’ is on offer!
